Every winter I spent some days in Komna, winter paradise for ski touring. Last years working on youth ski touring camps, this year, in collaboration with Mateja, a mountain guide, and Free living adventures, both visiting Komna from their childhood, we have started with a new project – Family Ski touring Camp. Three families with children from 2 – 10 years came to the Komna Mountain Hut for 3 days.
It is always so good to be here! I was hardly waiting to see the friends and the stuff on the hut. They are always so generous, great, happy, working hard and taking good care of people and environment. And the food… mmm, you can not stay hungry at Komna Hut – it is really a hotel style Mountain Hut!
Two guides, 5 children and few adults… Great team :). Children are good skiers, the smallest one was carried in backpack. They were all walking and we have carried their alpine skis. They are hardly waiting to get the REAL ski touring equipment, however, they will have to wait a little bit more … :).
The first day was a real expedition, long travel. In the morning the snow was hard, so the children walked with shoes, in the afternoon they used snowshoes. Skiing down from the first little hill was a real experience. Ski cross world cup :).
Break in the valley, time for playing and preparing for a new ascent. This one was more steep and some of them have also experienced some struggle on the way. Nevertheless, they all came up to our ‘base camp’ for today. Another break, time for hanging around and do some crazy things on snow. Meanwhile some adults reached another slope and ski down.
Relaxed and waiting for new adventures, we have continued toward one of the mountains around our base. When the slope became to steep, they have put down the snowshoes and walk. The motivation was high. If one is going, I am going also! 🙂
We have reached the ridge on 1.900 m and continued to the first little peak. The views were amazing! And the children were so proud! They did it, they went the whole way up, like their parents.
Skiing down on soft snow was a real pleasure. They were enjoying so much, looking to find some jumps on the way :).
Another break for children in the base camp and time for one or two slopes for adults. Lower down the snow was changing and more attention was needed. The sun was already loosing its strength and we were slowly returning to the Hut.
It was a long day. It was a full day. For most of the children, it was the first real experience of ski touring in high mountains. They were tired, but never tired enough to go to bed. Time for playing in the hut have just started! :).
